How this record came to be made: “…..Lewandowski´s music is clearly influenced by the German romantic school, while at the same time tending to use ancient Jewish chants in its melodies. In connection with a concert I gave in Nürnberg in 1980, I met the director and the cantor of the Jewish parish. This meeting led to the idea of preserving these last tokens of Jewish life from before the catastrophe of 1933, and to transmit them to coming  generations. This notion was embraced with great interest by the management of the Nürnberger Symphoniker and by Colosseum, their affiliated recording company. Thus the plan materialized to produce this recording of the service as it once used to be celebrated in the synagoge of Nürnberg.

As one of the few living witnesses to those special occasions I was proud to accept the artistic responsibility and guidance of this record. Very soon I also found the most expert and competent assistants whose names are gratefully acknowledged here. Im specially indebted to the Mayor of Nürnberg, Dr. Andreas Urschlechter and to the councillor in charge of education and the arts, Dr. Hermann Glaser, without whose sympathy and help the production of this commemorative record would not habe been possible. May this record do honour to the city of Nürnberg, as a reminder to the living and as a lesson for coming generations.” Heinz Freudenthal
